Alfonse D’Amato was a three term Republican senator from New York. My father, a lifelong Democrat who despised D’Amato, gave me a book to read about him so I would understand how terrible he was.
I got as far as the part where the author informed me that not only was D’Amato a problem child, but his dog was no good either. I stopped reading then, because it was clear that the book was so colored by hatred that it wouldn’t be worth my time.
Fast-forward to 2017. It is the holiday season, and the White House, under Melania Trump’s supervision, has been decked out for Christmas. Much of THE decor has a snow-covered theme which, presumably, is supposed to communicate purity, serenity, those sorts of things.
But then we have mainstream media.
Debra Heine of PJ Media has put together a compilation of attacks on the Christmas decor – that’s right, the Christmas decor – from Trump-hating media. You can read it by clicking here.
The descriptions include “dead branches, spine-chilling walls” and “The theme for the White House Christmas decorations is fear”.
Vogue magazine chimed in with this:
…the decor is “very, very white” and perhaps a manifestation of the first lady’s loneliness and isolation living in a White House with a man she can’t stand. “Is she trying to tell us something?” they asked. “Indeed, some of the decorations brought to life an apocalyptic, barren landscape similar to what some of us imagine lies in America’s future, or the calming white walls of a mental institution. One grim hallway in particular, lined with white branches lit from below, created a shadowy portal into, well, who knows.”
I could go on, but I prefer not to. You’ve got the link and you know how strong your stomach is for this kind of, er, “journalism”, so it’s up to you.
Since they attack what she wears, when she wears it, her accent (so help me), and even the Trumps’ pre-teen child, I suppose this should not be any surprise.
The surprise is that they then wonder why so few people trust media these days, and why so many react positively to President Trump’s attacks on them.
UPDATE: John Hinderaker, at powerlineblog.com, has posted a number of pictures of this year’s White House Christmas decor….and one from Barack Obama’s White House which, it seems to him (and me) is very much like what they decided to criticize about the Trump White House.
Click here to see them. Then, you decide.
