WASHINGTON D.C. EDUCATION: A PRICE/VALUE ANALYSIS

“Just give us the funding we need and watch the children\’s education improve”.

How many times have you heard or read some variation of that claim, usually by a member of the Teachers\’ Union?

With this in mind, please note that Washington D.C., at $29,349 per student (that is not a typo) spends far more than any other city in the country (New York City is a distant second at $23,966 per student).

So how is that working out?

The latest data show that, among Washington D.C.\’s 8th graders, 19% of its students  – less than one in five – are proficient in math…and 17% – even fewer – are proficient in reading.

That, of course, is before we get to the fact that a) a good number of students have already dropped out by eighth grade and b) “procient” doesn\’t mean that they are especially good, only passably OK.

Could those data be more appalling?

What is that money being spent for?  What is that money being spent on?

And why are our supposedly neutral mainstream media not talking about this?

Come to think of it, let\’s go back five years and also wonder why they looked the other way when Barack Obama (with his fellow Democrats marching in lock step) made a point of ending D.C.\’s “Opportunity Scholarship Program”, which subsidized parents of motivated students – vastly Black, it should be noted – to place their children in top-flight schools where they could escape the non-education they would otherwise be getting?

What was Mr. Obama afraid of?  That Sasha and Malia would have to endure being in the same classroom at pricey Sidwell Friends School, with those low-end kids from the poor neighborhoods?  That they would have to compete against them, maybe even lose the competition?

Can you begin to imagine what these same media would have done with this if it were President Bush making damn sure his two daughters didn\’t have to be in school with poor Black kids?  Any doubts about they would have said?

Well, that\’s no problem anymore, is it?  Those poor Black kids are stuck right back in schools where they won\’t learn a damn thing….thus maximizing prospects for them to eventually become dependent on government largesse, which Democrats will be happy to dole out in return for their loyalty on election day.

I guess, in Mr. Obama\’s world, that is a wonderful outcome.  But not in mine.  And, I hope, not in yours.
