“UNBROKEN”: SO-SO….BUT THE MOO SHU DISH WAS GREAT

Apropos of nothing political….

….it\’s Christmas day and you\’re Jewish.  What do you do?

You go to the movies and then out for Chinese food, of course.

We, with two other couples, saw Unbroken yesterday afternoon at the Starplex Cinema in East Windsor, NJ ($5.50 a seat, you can\’t beat that).  The theater was mobbed.

The last time I saw this many Jews showing tickets to get somewhere was on Yom Kippur.

Anyway, we decided to see “Unbroken” – which attempts to tell the remarkable, inspiring story of Louis Zamperini.  Mr. Zamperine, an Olympic athlete in the 1936 games and then a soldier during World War II, was adrift at sea in a lifeboat for over a month and a half after his plane crashed in the Pacific , and then interned in Japanese prisoner of war camps for years thereafter.

I say it “attempts” to tell the story because, though the movie was not terrible, it showed little other than the ugly, gruesome tortures Mr. Zamperini endured.  It did not show us the quality of the man himself (other than his superhuman ability to endure pain).  It largely left out his humanity, and relegated how he overcame impossible adversity to lead a rich, productive life after the war to a few written sentences at the end.  It could have been much, much better.

Anyway, the day was somewhat salvaged by the very good Chinese food we had afterwards, at nearby Hunan House – a restaurant that, as you might expect, was doing land-office business.  And, of course, it was great being with our friends.

Ok, this ends the chronicling of my personal life, at least for today. Now back to politics, which, in this country, is anything but “unbroken”.
