Ken Berwitz
The same man who, on September19th, told anUrbandale, Iowa crowd, “I lovethe Muslims. I think they\’re great people”, now – accordingto his own web site – “is calling for a total andcomplete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country\’s representativescan figure out what is going on.”
This means, in other words – actually, in pretty much the same words – that Muslims, who comprise about one eighth of the world\’s population, are great people…but that terrorist acts by radical Islamists turn them all – not just terrorists or radicals, but all Muslims – into pariahs who have no place in the United States.
If you\’re looking for logic here, don\’t bother. There isn\’t any.
These are the words of a bigoted man who, I am certain, knows better, but prefers to act like a know-nothing anyway…because it gins up a population segment which really does buy in to its inherent bigotry and – unlike a lot of people who say they will vote for Trump but won\’t – are a natural base for such garbage.
I wonder how many acts of disrespect, even violence, Trump\’s words will generate among Muslims in this country who are doing nothing but going about their everyday lives…
…including the Muslims I personally know, have worked with, talked with, laughed with, and are every bit as much citizens of the United States as I am.
What does Trump want to do with these Muslims? Ship \’em back to where they came from? WHY? What did THEY do? Does he want to ship all Jews back to where they came from because of Bernard Madoff too? How about all Italians because of the Mafia?
The good news – assuming I\’m reading this correctly – is that Donald Trump has about as much of a chance to become the Republican nominee as Mike Huckabee has of being asked to head moveon.org.
The bad news is that, though I\’m almost 100% certain about this, I might be wrong…
…which would be bad for me as a political analyst, but 1,000 times worse for us as a country.
