Please be advised that the term “burial” does not relate to Zemir Begic being buried. It has everything to do with the Zemir Begic story being buried.
Zemir Begic is the Saint Louis man who was beaten with hammers and killed early Sunday Morning, allegedly by four Black and Latino teenagers – three of whom have been picked up so far (aged 15, 16 and 17).
Yesterday I blogged about the fact that, even as Michael Brown continues as lead-story status every day, Mr. Begic\’s death was given minimal coverage. But that was after one day – so, in fairness – I just googled “Zemir Begic” and looked at the first threer pages.
So, just to be sure, I went to a fourth page. And I found one mainstream media story – from USA Today…
….except…
USA Today took care not to mention the ethnicity of the suspects – but made a specific point of reminding us that Michael Brown was Black and Officer Wilson was White. Its exact words:
TheSt. Louis area has been the center of protests since late August overthe shooting death of black teenager Michael Brown by a white policeofficer in the suburb of Ferguson, Mo. These turned violent inAugust, and again in late November after a grand jury decided not topress charges against Wilson.
Got it? When the “victim” is Black and the shooter is White, no problem at all mentioning skin color. When it is reversed? Suddenly skin color is not part of the story.
Sort of makes you wonder how the folks over at USA Today define the term “racism”, doesn\’t it?
At the end of my last blog about the killing of Zemir Begic, I asked: “do you have any opinion about differences in the way these two stories are being treated? And why?”
I\’m asking again now.
