What do you do when you, and your ideas, get massacred in a national election?
Well, if you\’re Barack Obama, you just ignore what the people told you and make a speech promising more and more of the same things that generated the massacre.
Excerpted from an editorial at Investors Business Daily:
TheState of the Union speech supposedly was chock full of big, brassynew ideas to help the middle class. Truth is, the president offeredlittle that hasn\’t already been tried and mostly failed.
TakeObama\’s “ambitious” call to extend the Internet\’s reach “toevery classroom, and every community” – a line that got a biground of applause. But the fact is the stimulus bill Obama signed in2009 included $7.2 billion to bring “true broadband to everycommunity.”
Andthat was on top of the 14-year-old “E-rate” program enactedby President Clinton that has now spent more than $31 billion tobring high-speed Internet to all the nation\’s public schools andlibraries.
It\’salso hard to fathom how anyone could describe Obama\’s call for”modern ports, stronger bridges, faster trains” as bold… infrastructure spending has skyrocketed under thispresident. Last year, the federal government spent 23% more ontransportation than it did in 2008, but the quality of roads, bridgesand trains still suffers.
Howabout Obama\’s call for free community college? As we pointed out hererecently, government grants and aid have already reached a pointwhere they more than cover the average cost of a two-year degree. SoObama\’s plan is little more than a federal takeover attempt ofstate-based community colleges.
Theone place where Obama did border on the ambitious was his call fortrade promotion authority, which would let him negotiate trade dealswithout endless meddling from Congress.
Thisstands out only because Obama has given short shrift to free tradefor six years – he barely mentioned it in previous State of theUnion speeches…
Obamadid, however, manage to slap a bold new label on his package ofshopworn liberal programs. Now he calls it “middle classeconomics.”
In other words, the Obama “plan” is to take the same crap he has been dishing out for years, dish out some more of it using a bold, aggressive tone of voice, and hope that a combination of Democrat partisans, low information voters and people with short memories will not notice.
Some of us do, Mr. President. Some of us do.
Elsewhere in the editorial, IBD points out that much of our mainstream media – still in Accomplice Mode – are touting his speech as something that would fit in nicely with Nathan Hale, Patrick Henry, FDR and possibly Moses holding the ten commandments (ok, I\’m exaggerating here. But I think you get the idea).
In reality this is the same dog and pony show we\’ve been treated to ever since the so-called “stimulus” package didn\’t stimulate anything — other than a chance to pretend that the deficit it generated in 2009 was on George Bush\’s budget, not Barack Obama\’s (which a scary number of people have been jobbed into believing).
Think about it: if that “stimulus” package actually did anything, how much of Tuesday\’s State Of The Union speech would already have been solved.
Now there\’s something mainstream media could have written about…but, in almost all cases, did not. Why?
