Yes, I know there is a group called the Democrat Socialists of America (DSA).
But, although they are certainly part of the reason for my blog title, they are not the only one. My reference is to virtually the entire Democrat Party.
Why?
Because – so help me, I’m not making this up – yesterday, a resolution condemning socialism was opposed by almost every Democrat in the House of Representatives.
Dooubt me (and I don’t blame you if you do)? Here is the beginning of Jenni Fink’s article for (usually Democrat-favoring) newsweek.com:
Eight House Democrats joined Republicans on Tuesday to vote for a resolution condemning socialism, helping the measure pass the House 220-192.
The Democrats who voted in favor were Kathy Castor of Florida, Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar of Texas, Darren Soto of Florida, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Don Davis of North Carolina and Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico.
Two Democrats, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania and Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, voted “present” rather than for or against the measure. One hundred ninety-two Democrats voted against the resolution.
What does the resolution actually do? From Ms. Finks’s article;
H.Res. 1490 is a House resolution titled “Providing for the condemnation and denouncement of socialism in all its forms, and for other purposes.”
The measure does not create a new federal program, impose penalties or change existing law. Instead, it serves as a formal statement expressing the sense of the House regarding socialism and related political ideologies.
The resolution includes findings asserting that socialist systems have historically led to economic hardship, political repression and mass human suffering. It cites examples from around the world and argues that socialist ideology has repeatedly resulted in failed governments and restrictions on personal freedoms.
The measure also focuses heavily on the DSA. It references positions associated with the organization and argues that socialism is incompatible with the principles of constitutional government in the United States.
And how did the Democrat house leadership react to this?
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar released a statement following the vote on Tuesday night saying, “The decision by two of our colleagues to blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus and join with the Republican majority to pass a procedural rule on the brink of failing represents a significant breach of trust. It is an action that necessitates a serious response, and we have asked the Committee on Caucus Rules to take this up in short order.”
That clear enough for you?
But, despite the clarity of what you just read, I guarantee Jeffries, and Schumer, and the rest of the Democrat leadership will try to wordsmith an answer to Mr. McCarthy…and that what they come up with will be salable to at least some of the hardline Democrat faithful; the ones who will believe anything they are told by a Democrat leader, no matter how lame.
Bottom line? If you thought the Democrat Party was not being overtaken by the socialist crowd, I would hope what you just read causes you to seriously reconsider.
It seems to me that either Democrat party leaders are so intimidated by the dozens of DSA members in their current ranks that it is scared to upset them, or that they have just flat-out conceded the party to them.
Which of those two is the good one? I’ll wait……
