THE SINGLE CRAZIEST INNING IN POST-GAME HISTORY

Ken Berwitz

My son called up to tell me I should put on the Texas Toronto game.

Boy was he ever right.

In the top of the 7th inning (which just ended, after 53 minutes), Texas went ahead of Toronto, 3 – 2 when, with a runner on third, Toronto catcher Russell Martin threw the ball back to the pitcher, but it hit the batter\’s bat and careened toward third base.  The runner scored.  There ensued 20 or so minutes of arguing about the rules, while debris was thrown on the field by Toronto fans…who did not do themselves very proud.

In the bottom of the inning, Toronto has gone ahead 6 – 3 on three – count \’em three – errors, and a misplay that could have been called a fourth error, then capped off with a huge three run home run.  Then there was almost a bench-clearing brawl, – with fans running on the field, more debris pouring out of the stands, and the Toronto dugout demanding that one or more fans be tossed out of the game (I don\’t know what for, but suspect there was a very good reason).

Now the Blue Jays have two more men on.

You\’ll read about this in more detail tomorrow.  But I am sitting here slack-jawed at what I am seeing.

Oh, one other thing:  there are two more innings.  This isn\’t over yet.  Who knows what will happen next?
