THE ROSEBURG MASSACRE

Ken Berwitz

Latest reports are that 13 (though other reports range from 7 to 15) students have been killed and many others injured (which makes a higher death toll very likely) in the massacre of students at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

It is also being reported that the killer is no longer active – meaning he has been captured alive or is dead.  I don\’t know. (UPDATE:  the shooter is being described as a 20 year old male, and is confirmed dead – killed by police after he fired on them and they fired back.)

More on this uglier than ugly horror show as it becomes available

UPDATE:  Gun-Free Zone, Unarmed Security:   Umpqua Community College is a gun-free zone…because, from the school\’s literature, “We want everyone to be safe and secure”.  And, according to KTVZ -TV (central Oregon), “The former president of an Oregon community college where a gunman opened fire, killing at least seven people, says the school has only one security officer on duty at a time, and that person isn\’t armed”

It is also being reported that the shooter, who remains unnamed (this clearly will not last) posted warnings on social media, yesterday, that he would be doing something violent at the school today.  And that four guns were found on the scene.

UPDATE:  There are multiple reports – unverified, so far as I know – that the killer asked his victims their religion and made a point of shooting Christians in the head, but wounding others in the leg.
FURTHER UPDATE:  the killer has been identified as chris harper mercer.  And, it is being reported, this is the profile he put up for an online dating service — in which he describes himself, among other things, as a mxed-race Republican conservative.
And in what appears to be a bizarre coincidence (at least as of now), one of the three Americans who foiled that terrorist attack on a train in Paris, Alec Skarlatos, comes from Roseburg, and went to Umpqua Community College.
I wonder if he knew mercer.
