I swear I am not making this quote up.

It comes to us from Vanessa Summers, a Democrat, and Indiana State Representative.  This is what Ms. Summers said about the 18 month old son of Republican Rep. Jud McMillin. – that’s right, his 18 month old son:

“I have told Representative McMillin I love his little son, but he’s scared of me because of my color. And that’s horrible…it’s true. And that’s something we’re going to work on. We’ve talked about it. And we’re going to work on it.

“I asked him ‘please, introduce your child to some people of color so that he won’t live his life as a prejudiced person.'”

You did not just read a satirical effort – and a not especially good one at that – from some would-be comedy writer.  You just read a real quote.  But if you doubt me (and I guess I don’t blame you), here’s the video.  Go to the 3:00 mark and you’ll hear it with your own ears”

At this point you may be wondering how Vanessa Summers would know that an 18 month old child who cried in her presence did so because she is Black.  If so, you’ll have to figure that one out for yourself.  Summers didn’t say.  To my knowledge there is no report that the child looked at her and said “Ooooh, she’s Black.  WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH”

And if that wasn’t enough, later, when questionned about her comment by a reporter for the Indianapolis Star, Summers had this to say:

“He looked at me like I was a monster and turned around and cried.  And I told him you need to introduce your child to some people that are dark-skinned so he will not be scared.”

Would an 18 month old child cry at the sight of Vanessa Summers because of her dark skin?  Well, you just looked at the video.  Is that the only reason that an 18 month might look at her and cry?  (I won’t be cruel enough to ask your adult opinion.)

Maybe it wasn’t the skin color, Vanessa.

I award Rep. Vanessa Summers Quote Of The Day honors for what has to be the most imbecilic, racist comment of 2015 so far.  And, though there are over 9 months to go, I have to say she’s a good bet to win that title for the entire year.
