Today’s quote comes to us from Trevor Noah, the allegedly funny host of Comedy Central’s Daily Show (I say “allegedly” because Noah has managed to lose something like 25 – 30% of the show’s entire audience since taking over for Jon Stewart).
Noah, who, along with virtually all the other “cool” TV hosts, desperately wanted Hillary Clinton to overhaul Donald Trump in last week’s election, is understandably distraught over the way things actually turned out.
And here is what he has to say about it:
“Well, the biggest thing I’ve seen is America is not as immune to the ills of the world as I thought it was. You know, I think a lot of the world is disappointed in America because America is that — is that beacon, that lighthouse, you know, a bastion of democracy. I think it’s sad we are living in a place we are normalizing and moving on so quickly from two glaring truths that were part of what happened in the election. I acknowledge a white working class that is something we can talk about, but we cannot deny that many of Donald Trump’s supporters were earning large amounts of money and doing great for themselves, but there are people who put two things above everything else—and that is whiteness and that is also sex and misogyny. People talk about the glass ceiling but what you don’t realize you can’t see it because it’s see-through and misogyny has quickly gone out of the conversation. And even as a man I have tough grips to come—there is a monster that keeps you down.”
Uh….oh, ok, Trevor. We got it.
Yeah, we can talk about working people – as long as we acknowledge we’re only talking about White working people – but the real reason for Trump winning is racism and sexism.
See, it had nothing to do with Trump running a campaign which spoke to keeping jobs in the country (I don’t recall him talking exclusively about White jobs, do you?), improving schools and safety for inner city schools (where we, of course, know all those White folks live), and securing our borders (try reading a poll on how people of ALL races feel about this, Trevor).
And it had nothing to do with the opposition party running an awful, eminently unlikable candidate, with not one major accomplishment to show for all her years in the public eye, who spent the entire campaign lying over and over again about the four years of emails she was nice enough to put on a personal server, so they would be available to every enemy of ours in the world – and whose single greatest “elect me” argument was her gender.
Naaahhh, what did that have to do with anything?
I award Trevor Noah Quote Of The Day honors for demonstrating that his talent for political analysis seems every bit as successful as his talent for maintaining the audience of the show he was handed on a silver platter.
