Ken Berwitz
Today\’s quote comes to us from advertising executive and “Morning Joe” regular, Donny Deutsch.
Mr. Deutsch understands that Republicans are doing extremely well this year by making the election a referendum on President Obama. But he cannot fathom why this would be; why Mr. Obama is so low in the polls, when he\’s doing such a bang-up job as President.
Deutsch\’s exact words:
“Istill want someone to answer the question \’why is Obama is at 42%\’when, if I\’m giving him talking points, unemployment is under 6%, gasis under 3 bucks, passed the most important legislation inthe last 50 years, saved the auto industry, killed osama binladen…it\’s stunning…You give him a report card…” (Mika Brzezinski finishes by saying “he gets an A”).
That is a great question, Donny. Let me help out:
-Unemployment, at 5.9%, still stinks. It is much higher than it was through most of President Bush\’s administration, and the only reason it\’s not closer to 8% or 9% is because so many people have given up looking (the job participation rate is at a 36 year low) and therefore don\’t count in the unemployment rate any more. Plus, the majority of jobs created under Barack Obama are part-time and low-paying….a fact which seems to have eluded you;
-Yes, gas is now “under 3 bucks”. But the day Obama took office it was under 2 bucks. Through most of his administration it has been much higher than it is now and, in any event, the only reason gas prices have dropped is that the huge oil discoveries from fracking – which Obama adamantly opposes – have dramatically increased our output. In other words, gas is “under 3 bucks” not because of Obama but in spite of him;
-“The most important legislation in the past 50 years”, ObamaCare, has never been liked or wanted by this country. Read every poll from every source, Donny. Oh, by the way, the fact that it kicks in once employees work 30 or more hours per week is a major reason so many new jobs are part-time instead of full-time;
-It is true Mr. Obama probably kept GM from going bankrupt. But it was at a cost of over $10 billion to the country, and a major tax abatement. If GM had gone bankrupt and re-organized, many people feel it would be in better condition than it is now, and taxpayers would not have gotten soaked. As for the other two of the “big 3” US automakers, Chrysler is now foreign owned, and Ford never took the money Obama offered. Keep trying;
-Obama, despite his preening and your BSing, did not kill osama bin laden. Navy SEALs killed osama bin laden – whom they found by using information which was gained in ways Obama opposed and would never have agreed to. If it were up to Barack Obama, bin laden would still be at large.
-That\’s some helluvan “A” report card, Mika.
In 1969, after Richard Nixon won the presidency, New Yorker film critic, Pauline Kael was inaccurately quoted as saying “I can\’t believe Nixon won. I don\’t know anyone who voted for him.” For 45 years, this has stood as a paradigm of liberal elitism and obtuseness.
In actuality, her exact quote was “I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don\’t know. They\’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I\’m in a theater I can feel them”…which, realistically speaking, is pretty much the same thing, showing the same elitism and obtuseness.
But there is no doubt at all about what Donny Deutsch said.
I award Mr. Deutsch “Quote Of The Day” honors, for making a comment that is so out of touch with reality that it stands as a paradigm of why some folks should, every now and then, get out of the studio, out of the executive offices, out of the luxury condo and out of the Hamptons, to find out what\’s really going on.
