Ken Berwitz
Today\’s quote comes to us from Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC\’s “Morning Joe” show.
It seems Bill Clinton – either on his own or because Hillary sent him out to do it – implored primary voters not to be lured in by Bernie Sanders, because, in Clinton\’s words, Sanders sounds angry and his slogans are easier to say.
Here is what Mr. Scarborough had to say about Hubby Bubba\’s words:
“I meanno disrespect to Bill Clinton, I really don\’t. And I\’m not talking about himgenerally, but specifically in that scene when I hear those words coming out ofa politician\’s mouth, I know I\’m listening to a loser.
“I\’m listening to somebody that is losing,that\’s saying, \’oh, they\’ve got better slogans, oh, they\’ve got better this,oh, their polls may be a little higher now or, oh, they may be more angry. But…\’ I\’ve heard that form of that speech a thousand times and it\’s never good forthe one giving it”
If Bernie Sanders were way behind, the Clinton people would ignore him, the way they do Martin O\’Malley.
If Bernie Sanders were somewhat behind, they would still be trying to keep it positive, to show Ms. Clinton is above the political fighting, thus a better person, thus a better candidate.
But Bernie Sanders is at least competitive in Iowa, and has an excellent chance of winning both there and in New Hampshire. If that were to happen, it would create a credibility level for Clinton, coupled with momentum for Sanders, whicht might vastly improve Sanders\’ fortunes in the Southern primaries which follow.
Could that happen?
Well, today, Justin Bamberg, a South Carolina State Representative – and the Black lawyer representing the family of Walter Scott, who was shot dead while running from a South Carolina police officer – is formally announcing a switch in his endorsement from Clinton to Sanders….because, in his own words:
“Hillary Clinton is more arepresentation of the status quo when I think about politics or about what itmeans to be a Democrat. BernieSanders on the other hand is bold. He doesn\’t think like everyone else. He isnot afraid to call things as they are.”
There is no greater nightmare for Hillary Clinton than the loss of Black support. A switch like this, which will be extremely high-profile in South Carolina, could result a competitive race there – maybe just a bare win, or even a loss. Add it to the Iowa/New Hampshire scenario, and it does not take a genius to see that this could move the Clinton campaign to complete collapse.
That is why Bill Clinton has been trotted out to say what he did.
Joe Scarborough sees Clinton\’s plea as a form of begging. He wins Quote Of The Day honors because that\’s exactly the way I see it too, and I\’m the guy who gives out the award.
Any questions?
