Todays’ quote comes to us from Rep. James Clyburn, the 16 term Democrat Representing South Carolina’s 6th District, who has also been the House Majority Whip, Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, and other such positions of importance. Rep. Clyburn is also credited with saving Joe Biden’s presidential run in 2020, thus enabling him to win the election and serve (or at least pretend to serve) until January of this year.
While being interviewed by Ali Velshi on MSNBC this past Friday, the talk turned to why Democrats are losing ground among voters.
And here – so help me, he really said this – was his answer:
“I think the message coming from the Democratic Party is a good message. The problem we’ve got is that we have to depend upon the media to deliver it.”
Huh? Wait a minute. Was Clyburn actually complaining about the media coverage given the Harris/Walz ticket, compared to what those media did to Trump/Vance?????
Clyburn continued:
“If we have The Washington Post, for instance, caving to this wannabe dictator and we’ve got other media entities that seem to rather push a narrative that will bring eyes to their newspapers or to their television sets and not really give a fair hearing or reporting to what we’re doing.”
That is truly jaw-dropping.
Reality check: mainstream media’s coverage of Trump/Vance in particular and Republicans in general – very much including the Washington Post – was vastly more negative than their coverage of Kamala Harris, Tim Walz and the Democrat Party. We are not talking about a small difference, we are talking about a gargantuan difference.
But Clyburn – a safe-district Democrat who couldn’t lose an election in South Carolina’s 6th if he tried, let’s remember – didn’t think they went far enough.
iAnd in case you’re seriously wondering about whether he has a point, you might want to read this from the (conservative, it should be pointed out) Media Research Center:
One week before Election Day, a new analysis from the Media Research Center finds that broadcast evening news coverage of the 2024 presidential race has been the most lopsided in history. Since July, ABC, CBS and NBC have treated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris to 78 percent positive coverage, while these same networks have pummeled former Republican President Donald Trump with 85 percent negative coverage. (See Methodology explanation at the end of this post.)
These are the media that Democrat Rep. James Clyburn is complaining about? These are the media that are too positive for Republicans compared to Democrats?
I award James Clyburn Quote Of The Day honors for sheer chutzpah.
The fact that, qualitatively, his chutzpah (sorry for the bad pun) is nutzpah? Hey, why bother with trivialities?
