Today’s quote comes to us from Donny Deutsch, a “branding expert”, former Ad company president, MSNBC TV personality and (no surprise given the MSNBC connection) leftward Democrat partisan.
Here, from today’s podcast with Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), is Deutsch’s reaction to what he (correctly) sees as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders increasingly becoming the faces of the overall Democrat Party:
“What scares me — some of the big voices out there: AOC, Bernie Sanders. Even if their message of economic populism is a resonating message, they as messengers — I’m the branding guy that says, ‘Whoa, the party is way, way left.’ That’s what scares me.
“That’s what says, if I see the — you know, I look at you, a moderate guy with a progressive voice — I look at Bernie, I look at AOC, and this is not here to bash them, but to say, from a branding point of view, it gives the opposite side the chance to say, ‘Oh, the party is so far left. They’re not relevant to your needs, swing voter.’”
Interesting.
Read that quote carefully. Deutsch is not objecting to the “economic populism” positions. He is just worried that the fact Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders are the ones presenting those positions enables Republicans to say it shows the Democrat Party has swung too far to the left.
In other words, it enables Republicans to point out that the Democrat Party has become…what the Democrat Party has, in fact, become.
I award Donny Deutsch Quote Of The Day honors for stating this problem so accurately.
