THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today\’s quote comes to us from George Kenneth (G.K.) Butterfield, Democrat congressperson from North Carolina and new chairperson of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Here is what Mr. Butterfield has to say about the upcoming (almost certainly this weekend) grand jury decision on whether to indict Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson for shooting and killing Michael Brown:

“Iwas a judge for 15 years… I would certainly hope the grand jurywill find that there is sufficient evidence that a crime probably wascommitted… but if they turn their back on justice I am fearful thatthere will be pushback from those who are concerned about it and I amone of those”

I would give you more context on this quote, but I can\’t – since Rep. Butterfield had the interview it came from scrubbed from his web site, and I cannot find an audio of it at WUNC (North Carolina Public Radio), which conducted the interview.

I have a question for G. K. Butterfield:  suppose, when you were a judge, while presiding over a controversial case, another judge – who had not sat in on any part of the trial – went on a radio station and said that if you did not rule a certain way you would be turning your back on justice.  What do you say about that, Judge Butterfield?

And what should we say about the head of an overtly racist group like the CBC – comprised exclusively of Black congresspeople with no non-Blacks welcome to join – giving his opinion on any racial issue?

I award G.K. Butterfield  Quote Of The Day honors for the extra-sensory powers he must have to be able to judge the conduct of a grand jury he has not sat in on one session of…and for hypocrisy above and beyond the call of duty.
