Today’s paragraph comes to us from James Hohmann, writing for the Washington Post.  Mr. Hohmann wins Paragraphs Of The Day honors for providing us with chapter and verse of how the Angry Beauty Queen story was resurrected from the 20-year-old garbage heap and made into a campaign issue by Hillary Clinton:

— Operatives in Brooklyn had been working with Machado since the summer. They had a video featuring her story ready to go. Cosmopolitan had a photo spread of her draped in an American flag – to go with a profile – in the can. Machado had also conducted an interview with The Guardian that was “apparently embargoed for post-debate release,” according to Vox. And the Clinton super PAC Priorities USA turned a digital ad to highlight the insults by early afternoon.

The Clinton press shop then set up a conference call for Machado to respond to what Trump said on “Fox and Friends.” Speaking with reporters, Machado recounted how Trump “always treated me like a lesser thing, like garbage” and that his new words are like “a bad dream.” She said in a mix of Spanish and halting English that she watched the debate with her mother and daughter and cried as Clinton recounted her story, Ed O’Keefe reports.

Great work by the Clinton team.  Did they ever put the wood to Trump on this one.

But there’s a point to be made here.

What good would all of that prep, all of that legwork, have been if mainstream media were not right there, like good little puppy dogs waiting for Mama Hillary to fill their bowls with the latest gossip on Trump?

If media had looked at this story, collectively shrugged their shoulders and said, “this is 20 year old, uncorroborated material, we can’t use this”, all the Clinton people’s efforts would have been for nothing.

Conversely, if media believed that this kind of material was newsworthy, then, for exactly the same reason, they would reminded us of the 20 year old, fully corroborated, instances of Hillary Clinton aiding and abetting smear campaigns against every woman who ever said she was molested or raped by Hubby Bubba.

Had this happened, it would have shown Donald Trump as a sexist pig…..and Hillary Clinton as the willing enabler of a sexual predator.

But they haven’t said a word about Hillary’s complicity in Hubby Bubba’s sexual predations, have they?

What does this tell us?  It tells us that this was not an issue of the 20 year old Alicia Machado story being meaningful.  It was an issue of her story being meaningful because it could be used to torpedo Donald Trump, but far worse behavior by Hillary Clinton, which might damage her even more, was no news at all.

And, with thanks to John Hohmann for this example (one of a great many to choose from), that is the sad, disgraceful story of today’s mainstream media.
