THE PARAGRAPHS OF THE DAY

Ken Berwitz

Today\’s paragraphs come to us from Adam Entous\’s article in the Wall Street Journal.  When reading it, please keep in mind that Jonathan Pollard is approaching 30 years imprisonment for spying on behalf of our ally, Israel…and that President Obama has made good and sure that he would not be released any time soon:

The U.S. closelymonitored Israel\’s military bases and eavesdropped on secret communications in2012, fearing its longtime ally might try to carry out a strike on Fordow,Iran\’s most heavily fortified nuclear facility.

Nervesfrayed at the White House after senior officials learned Israeli aircraft hadflown in and out of Iran in what some believed was a dry run for a commandoraid on the site. Worried that Israel might ignite a regional war, the WhiteHouse sent a second aircraft carrier to the region and readied attack aircraft,a senior U.S. official said, “in case all hell broke loose.”

Thisraises a two major issues – neither of them very pleasant:

-If, asthe U.S. official feared, “all hell broke loose”, which side would wehave been doing something about?  Never in my lifetime did I believe thiswould be a serious question…but in this administration, after 7 years ofgiving Israel the back of its hand, and creating a “deal” with Iranthat virtually assures Israel will be in mortal danger, It has to beasked.

-If,based on what was happening beforehand, readied ourselves against thepossibility of a war between Iran and Israel, why the HELL did we not have ourBenghazi compound on highest alert, with contingency plans in place, to protectagainst terrorists who had free reign in Benghazi and had already attackedthe compound, hit us on 9/11, the one day of the year they would have mostliked to do so?  Why were our people hung out to dry?

AdamEntous wins Paragraphs Of The Day honors for – maybe intentionally, maybeinadvertently – raising these issues.

How Iwish I had good answers for them.
