THE PARAGRAPH OF THE DAY

Today\’s paragraph comes to us from Michelle Malkin\’s latest column, in which she (more than justifiably) attacks Michelle Obama for turning a cute little incident (assuming it even happened) from years ago into a racial paradigm today – just in case racial tensions weren\’t high enough already.

Here is how the incident was portrayed by Ms. Obama during a late-night TV segment years ago:

OnDavid Letterman\’s show in 2012, the haute-couture-clad first ladyrecounted the same “incognito” Target visit to demonstrateher just-like-you bona fides. She chuckled as she shared how theshopper asked: “Can you reach on that shelf and hand me thedetergent?” As the audience laughed with delight and Mrs. Obamagrinned from ear to ear, she told Letterman: “I reached up,\’cause she was short, and I reached up, pulled it down — she said,\’Well, you didn\’t have to make it look so easy.\’ That was myinteraction. I felt so good.”

And here is how Ms. Obama is characterizing it today, within a People Magazine interview – just in time to inflame racial enmities during the holiday season:

“Ithink people forget that we\’ve lived in the White House for sixyears,” the first lady told PEOPLE, laughing wryly, along withher husband, at the assumption that the first family has been largelyinsulated from coming face-to-face with racism.

“Itell this story – I mean, even as the first lady – during thatwonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who askedme to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn\’t see meas the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Thosekinds of things happen in life. So it isn\’t anything new.”

Ms. Malkin goes on to note that – assuming this story is even true – Michelle Malkin is 5\’ 11″, well above average for a woman, so the request just might have been due to her height rather than her skin color – which Ms. Obama herself said in so many words on the Letterman show over two years ago.

But, then again, why let a good “we are victims” narrative go to waste – even when it was told without any hint of victimization in the past?

Among the Obamas\’ countless – and still rapidly increasing – number of lies, is that either of them has any intention at all of bringing this country together. Thank you, Michelle Malkin, for making this fact so clear.
