Is the “deal” Barack Obama and John Kerry are cutting with Iran supposed to lessen the threat of nuclear weapons in the hands of people who might then use them?
The answer, ostensibly, is yes.
But in reality – like just about every other facet of foreign policy put together by the hopelessly inept, incompetent Mr. Obama and the hopelessly useless Mr. Kerry, it is likely to be a disaster.
Excerpted from an article in the Wall Street Journal, via John Hinderaker’s commentary at powerlineblog.com:
As U.S. and Iranian diplomats inched toward progress on Tehran’s nuclear program last week, Saudi Arabia quietly signed its own nuclear-cooperation agreement with South Korea.
That agreement, along with recent comments from Saudi officials and royals, is raising concerns on Capitol Hill and among U.S. allies that a deal with Iran, rather than stanching the spread of nuclear technologies, risks fueling it.
Saudi Arabia’s former intelligence chief, Prince Turki al-Faisal, a member of the royal family, has publicly warned in recent months that Riyadh will seek to match the nuclear capabilities Iran is allowed to maintain as part of any final agreement reached with world powers. This could include the ability to enrich uranium and to harvest the weapons-grade plutonium discharged in a nuclear reactor’s spent fuel. …
Does that look like the “deal” Obama and Kerry are cutting with Iran will lessen the nuclear threat?
Or does it look like the “deal” – which, as we currently understand it, allows Iran to keep its nuclear capabilities, based on trust (Trust? With IRAN???) will force neighboring states to protect themselves by obtaining their own nuclear weaponry?
What happens when Saudi Arabia starts building its nuclear capabilities? Can Syria be far behind? Yemen? Libya? Iraq?
Will the “deal” Obama and Kerry are cutting with Iran spur a nuclear arms race that will result in the Middle East becoming a nuclear playground? What is that likely to result in?
Think about it: is this a nuclear prevention deal, or – based on the logical consequences – is it a nuclear proliferation deal?
I hope to god that Obama and Kerry come to their senses and do not sign on to any kind of a “deal” which leads to such a sequence of events. But based on their performance in virtually every other area of foreign policy, I have no reason to believe that coming to their senses is in the picture.
Less than two years until these two are gone. How I wish it were sooner.
