THE NAFTA REVISION: UPDATE

With the disgraceful sham proceedings regarding Judge Brett Kavanaugh in full tilt, other important issues have been pushed to the side and under-reported.

But here’s one which, if it comes to fruition, should be front-page news.

From Sofia Miselem’s article for Agence France Presse, via yahoo.com:

The United States and Canada have told Mexico they could reach a compromise within 48 hours on keeping the updated North American Free Trade Agreement a three-country deal, the Mexican economy minister said Friday.

Speaking as he presented the Mexican Senate with the current US-Mexican agreement to update NAFTA — which does not include Canada, the third member of the original deal — Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said Washington and Ottawa were making a “very serious,” last-ditch attempt to bridge their differences.

“For the first time, we’re seeing a real effort by both sides,” he said.

“In the next 48 hours, we will know if we are going with a trilateral agreement.”

If this is true, it will mean the Trump administration will have successfully renegotiated and revamped NAFTA.

It can be said that the result will be more advantageous for us.  Or just more equitable than the old NAFTA was.

No matter how you characterize it, however, the result will be a deal that benefits the United States.  And one that would never have been started, let alone completed, if Hillary Clinton had become President.

Will mainstream media, which joined Ms. Clinton and other Democrats in severely attacking President Trump for using our economic leverage to bring Mexico and Canada into this new deal, give him credit if it succeeds?  Don’t bet on it.

Or maybe Barack Obama will get in front of the cameras to say that he started it and deserves the credit. If he did that with our soaring economy, why not NAFTA too?

I wonder how important this will be to the mid-term elections.  I would think that for most states, it probably will have little effect.  But for states with industries that directly benefit from a new NAFTA?  Another story.

Let’s hold off until the deal is actually completed, and see which politicians from which states say what about it.

  • Didn’t the left hate nafta and complained about it since the beginning?
Of course now I am sure they love it and always have, Winston.
