THE MILE HIGH CITY (DOES THAT MEAN DRUGS?)

Maybe it’s the legal marijuana.

Denver, Colorado has decided either that local ordinances supersede federal law, or that it somehow makes them look good to pretend they do.

From an unbylined article at CBS News – Denver:

Dozens of people filled the room where the Denver City Council met on Wednesday to consider taking a stance on protecting immigrants from federal agents. The safety committee passed the ordinance by a vote of 6-1.

Denver City Council members Robin Kniech and Paul Lopez are spearheading the bill. More than 100 people were in attendance to urge council members to approve the ordinance.

Among those in attendance at the meeting was Victor Galvan who told CBS4 Investigator Rick Sallinger he is in the country without proper paperwork.

“Are you worried about being arrested here today?” asked Sallinger.

“Definitely not worried about being arrested here today. I have a lot of community around me and I don’t think they would allow it,” replied Galvan.

He was one of those anxious to urge the city council safety committee to give its okay to an ordinance that would safeguard those immigrants going to court from being put in jail if they that don’t have proper documentation.

An immigration attorney, who backed the proposal, reiterated that it complies fully with the law. She said that first, it is the council’s job to protect residents and their tax dollars, which it does.

“Your duty, number two, is to comply with the U.S. Constitution at all times. This ordinance does that. Your job, number three, is also to comply with and not be inconsistent with the federal law or state law. This ordinance does that as well. This ordinance simply says that we are not going to violate the constitution simply because the federal government is asking us to,” said immigration attorney Joy Athanasiou.

Let’s start with the obvious pro-illegal slant of this article:

-“Protecting immigrants from federal agents?  Immigrants?  Not illegal immigrants???

Uh…legal immigrants don’t need any protections from federal agents.  That is because they are legal.

“It is the council’s job to protect residents and their tax dollars, which it does“?  Based on what, other than the bias in this article?

And then we have the legal issue.

Illegal immigrants, despite career illegal advocate Joy Athanasiou’s ignorance, stupidity or dishonesty, can’t be protected by a city ordinance because a city ordinance does not supersede federal law.  A first year law school dropout would know that, and so does Ms. Athanasiou.  But when you’re an advocate, little trifles like reality, fly right out the window.

Bottom line?  This is another mindless example of grandstanding by a one-party city (Denver’s has not had a Republican mayor in 56 years ago), to show how sympathetic they are to illegal aliens.

And, though I cannot prove it in a court of law, anyone who thinks there is no connection between this position and Democrats fighting Voter ID laws – so that illegal immigrants have a shot at showing their appreciation at the voting booth – needs a common sense transplant.

Personally I hope ICE comes into Denver next week, and informs the geniuses on its city council that they either comply with federal law or suffer the consequences.
