One year I looked upon D.C.
And saw a march that didn\’t be.
It didn\’t be on this year too
If media were all we knew
I concede my poetry is not original, and it is a little mangled/non-grammatical. But I hope it gets the point across.
Yes, there was a March For Life yesterday in Washington D.C., on the anniversary of Roe V Wade.
Yes, Tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, attended (depending on which report you believe) – with a high percentage of them young people of child-bearing age (just like in all the other years).
And, yes, mainstream media did this year what they did all the other years: either barely covered it or completely ignored it.
I googled “2015 March For Life” and checked the first five pages. No NBC, or CBS, or ABC, or New York Times, or…..well, you get the message.
But when a tiny number of Michael Brown/Eric Garner “protesters” staged an impromptu disruption of a few brunch restaurants in New York City earlier this month ? No problem finding that everywhere.
Personally, my views on abortion would not be looked on favorably by the March For Life people. I have no problem with contraceptives, including so-called “day-after” varieties, and I have no problem with a woman having an abortion – until there is a beating heart and brain activity, at which time I consider it a child.
But I have a major problem with mainstream media which decide that if they disagree with the goals of a population segment, they will not report newsworthy events about that population segment. Which, obviously, is what happened here.
That is not reporting news, that is manipulating news. It\’s what they do in Cuba and North Korea. Not – well, at least ostensibly not – what we do here.
Illustratively, here are the results of a CBS News poll, taken this past summer:
|
“Which of these comes closest to your view? Abortion should be generally available to those who want it. OR, Abortion should be available, but under stricter limits than it is now. OR, Abortion should not be permitted.” |

As you can see, most people feel abortion should be either more restricted than it currently is, or not permitted at all. And the trend, at least for the past two waves, is for less abortion availability, not more.
That\’s not some lunatic fringe group, folks. That\’s a majority of the country. And media which will not report events related to the beliefs of that much of the country have no right to call themselves neutral.
