THE IMPEACHMENT DUD

For two years, virtually since Donald Trump became President, Democrat have been talking – in some cases incessantly screaming – about impeachment.

But now, according to CNN’s latest polling, Democrat fervor for impeachment is significantly dropping.

In December, the poll commissioned by CNN showed  80% of Democrats, and 43% of the overall population favoring impeachment.

Now?  68% of Democrats favor impeachment – a statistically significant drop of 12%.  And 36% of the overall population favors impeachment – a 7% drop that is mostly accounted for by the drop in Democrat support.

Assuming these data are accurate, why is this happening?

Is it because Nancy Pelosi came out with a snarky, insulting statement against impeaching Trump?  Her exact words:

“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path.  It divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

Is it because people are now aware that the mueller “investigation” almost certainly will show no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, which was the basis for impeachment demands in the first place?

Or are they just tied of the incessant, years-long drumbeat about impeachment, accompanied by seeing Adam Schiff’s face on TV every three minutes assuring them there is hard evidence of collusion – evidence which has never materialized, and makes him look like a loudmouthed partisan jerk?

It could be one or more of those three possibilities, or maybe something else I’m not thinking of.  But whatever it is – again assuming CNN’s numbers are correct – the impeachment strategy is dying.

(What will Maxine Waters do now?  Maybe something new, like getting something done for her congressional district – the one she visits during election campaigns but does not live in).

This, of course, does not mean that investigations of Donald Trump are going to end.  Schiff, and his partisan-hack counterpart Jerrold Nadler now head committees in the House, and they’ve made it clear they will pursue other ways of trying to take Trump down.

How the public reacts to “Ok, we didn’t get him on this, so let’s try that” remains to be seen.
