THE GOLDEN GLOBES-

Forgetting the political drivel….partly because it was predictable and partly because it was forgettable (did you need a road map to find out Hollywood doesn’t like Donald Trump?), just a few points about the Golden Globes:

-Jimmy Fallon was a terrific host.  The opening routine was a pleasure to watch, he handled a teleprompter glitch masterfully, and – despite the political crap – he was a major asset.

-I was both happy and sad that Viola Davis won “Best Supporting Actress” for Fences:

…Happy because a) she was absolutely brilliant, and b) because I thought she was worthy of winning for The Help And Doubt, so it was about time she received an award like this;

…Sad, because the fact that she, along with a good number of other Black performers, won this year – after the stink made about there not being enough Black representation at last year’s Oscars – will probably put something of an asterisk next to their names, even though Ms. Davis gave us a performance that should have won regardless of any other factor.

-I was also happy that Ryan Gosling won Best Actor for his amazing performance in La La Land, and that Casey Affleck won Best Actor for a Drama for his excellence in Manchester By The Sea.  I hope that at the Oscars – where there is just one Best Actor category – Mr. Gosling takes it as well (Affleck was tremendous, but Gosling was transcendental).

-I was disgusted by the fact that Stephen McKinley Henderson – who was in both Fences and Manchester By The Sea – did not receive a Best Supporting Actor nomination for playing Denzel Washington’s (Troy Maxson’s) friend, Jim Bono.  He was nothing short of great, and I hope the Oscars right this wrong.
