I’ll be as brief and to the point as I can:
In any real sense, Joe Biden cannot continue as the Democrat presidential nominee. Too many members of his own party and Democrat-friendly media have come out hoping/asking/demanding that he end his re-election campaign.
If he refuses to do so and decides to run anyway, it means major political and media supporters will have to gulp hard, and tell voters that even a severely debilitated Biden is better than Trump…i.e. acknowledging that Biden is severely debilitated…
…which means that, assuming he makes it through four more years, his second term (just like his first, if you ask me) will not be run by Biden himself, but by the leftist cadre who have been and will continue to be in control of him. You can be sure Republicans will make this known every day of the election campaign.
But since no one in his or her right mind believes that what is left of Joe Biden will last four more years, this also means that voting for Joe Biden is voting for his constitutional replacement; Kamala Harris – who, if you believe the polls, is the single least favorable Vice President in the history of polling. You can be sure Republicans will also make this known every day of the election campaign.
How many people who might have gritted their teeth and voted for debilitated, “he’ll never make it through four more years” Joe Biden if he had a viable VP in place, will be lost because it means putting Kamala Harris in charge of the country?
But what if Biden, either voluntarily or otherwise, does step down? What if Democrats have to pick a new candidate?
The obvious next in line is VP Kamala Harris. A Black woman with horrific poll numbers that should, under most circumstances end her prospects right there. The problem, however, is that if she is passed over – i.e. rejected – in favor of anyone but another Black woman, Democrats would probably lose a large number of mostly minority and hard left votes; enough to give Trump several key states, thus probably losing the election.
But if they do pick Harris, Democrats would also lose a large number of votes based on her unpopularity, and probably lose the election anyway.
The obvious solution? Michelle Obama – the only Black woman who is being talked about as a replacement.
The problem with Ms. Obama? She has never held any elective office and her only “qualification” (if you want to call it that) is that she’s married to Barack Obama.
That said, however, Obama might be the solution because she would likely be seen as a front for husband Barack’s “third term” – which would be very appealing to most Democrats, as well as at least some anti-Trump Republicans
But even here there is a major problem: Ms. Obama has made it pretty clear she does not have any interest in running. Yes, she might change her mind (this is politics, after all). But, as of now, that is her decision.
So there is the current state of Democrat presidential prospects.
If I were a Democrat operative, I think I would need Sominex, Ambien and maybe a quart of vodka to get a night’s sleep.
