Last night, Democrats won every major election I am aware of. And won most of them big.
-Not at all unexpectedly socialist/crypto communist zohran mamdani won the mayoral election in New York City, beating Cuomo by 8%, with Sliwa sunk below 10%. Way to go, New York. Just remember; you get what you vote for.
-In New Jersey, Mikey Sherrill won in a landslide over Jack Ciatterelli. This was a surprise to me; I thought Ciatterelli might pull off a close win. But that did not happen. Will Sherrill be nothing more than a continuation of Democrat incumbent Phil Murphy? We’ll have four years to find out.
-In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger had a landslide win in the Governor’s race over Winsome Earle-Sears. Like Sherrill in New Jersey, Spanberger postures herself as a moderate. We’ll see….
-Also in Virginia, jay jones, the candidate who wished death on Republicans said he would piss on their graves, and wished death to the children of one of his Republican opponents, won the Attorney General race; not in a landslide, but by about 7% – i.e. with room to spare. Congratulations to Virginians. How proud you must be.
-And in California, Prop 50 – which would allow the already Democrat-controlled set of congressional districts to be redistricted and made even moreso – won by an almost two-to-one margin (current count is 64% – 36%). Right now, the state’s creative districting gives Democrats 43 of 52 seats; about 83% to 17% in a state that votes almost 40% Republican. Now they can contort those districts to give even more seats to Democrats/less to Republicans…in the name of “making things fairer”.
Now: what do we learn from this?
Perhaps the single greatest lesson of this disastrous election year for Republicans is that Donald Trump has exactly no coattails. None.
Whatever you think of him as a President, Trump’s egomaniacal, wildly exaggerated mouthings makes himself so distasteful as a person to so many people that he is, I would think, anathema for Republicans in almost any competitive district.
Will that attitude about Trump still obtain in 2028? No one can know for sure. But would you bet against it?
Personally I wouldn’t bet a nickel.
