As I type this, President Obama is making a statement about the death of U.S. Dr. Warren Weinstein, and Italian Giovanni Lo Porto, both aid workers held hostage by al-qaeda, who, it was announced today, were killed in mid-January during a failed U. S. counter-intelligence drone strike.
I will wait until I learn more before blogging further about this horrible situation. But what I want to say at the outset is that, unless some unexpected, egregious information becomes available, I ascribe no blame to anyone involved with the strike, up to, and including, President Obama. I blame al-qaeda, its supporters and its facilitators.
When murderous terrorists gain control of land areas and take hostages, any attempt to remove them from those land areas and rescue those hostages will inherently be fraught with danger. This one did not work out, which is horribly tragic…but that is the risk which is always present in such situations.
My heart goes out to the Weinstein and Lo Porto families.
