THE ADL: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

The Anti-Defamation League, an organization which is supposed to defend Jews from anti-Semites – is unhappy that Howard Ellison is well on his way to becoming the chairperson of the Democratic National Committee.

From Ben Kamisar’s article at thehill.com:

The Anti-Defamation League on Thursday voiced its opposition to Minnesota Rep. keith ellison’s bid to run the Democratic Party, citing “deeply disturbing and disqualifying” past statements about Israel.

Pointing to a resurfaced 2010 speech, the CEO of the Jewish civil rights group, Jonathan Greenblatt, questioned whether “Ellison faithfully could represent the Democratic Party’s traditional support for a strong and secure Israel.”

The League’s statement deals a blow to Ellison’s bid to lead the Democratic National Committee. So far, he has emerged as the frontrunner with a large slate of endorsements from across the political spectrum, including incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and populist darling and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

I’m glad the ADL has spoken up against the hard left, virulently anti-Israel Howard Ellison.  That’s very nice and very correct.

But where was the ADL on Ellison throughout his career – which was preceded by a 10 year stint with louis farrakhan’s racist, anti-Semitic Nation of Islam?

And where was the ADL when, pious mouthings and occasional support aside, Barack Obama gave Israel the back of his hand the 8 years he has been President?

And where was the ADL during the last 20 years, when the Democratic Party has slipped further and further into disdain for Israel and support for Palestinian Arabs who are committed in writing to Israel’s obliteration?

And where was the ADL in this current election cycle, when Hillary Clinton ran for President while supported by a cadre of self-hating, Israel-hating Jews such as george soros, sidney blumenthal and max blumenthal, along with huma abedin, whose entire family was neck-deep in the Muslim brotherhood?

And where was the ADL when Donald Trump, a decades-long strong supporter of Israel, was accused of being an anti-Semite, based on one ad with a the outline of a six-pointed star, which was immediately taken down when objections were raised that it could have been seen as representing a star of David?

So, yes, I am gratified to see that, in this instance, the Anti-Defamation League – in a vacuum (i.e. speaking of ellison specifically, not the Democrat mindset that, increasingly, is just fine with him) – has stepped up to the plate.  But, to me, this is too little, too late.

As long as the ADL remains, for the most part, a subsidiary of the Democrat Party, its occasional straying from that political orthodoxy is not going to mean much to me, or any one else.  Certainly not to Democrats, as long as they still have the organization in their hip pockets.

One other thing:  shame on Chuck Schumer, a man I generally respect, for supporting keith ellison.  I expect it from Bernie Sanders, who has spent his career on the anti-Israel side.  But not Schumer.

What’s wrong with him?  Is this the price he had to pay to become Senate Minority Leader without a serious challenge?   If so, it was too high.  Way too high.
