Ever wonder why Donald Trump, who grew up rich and then became a multi-billionaire, and seems far more interested in his own personal glory than anything else, would even consider running for President?
I think I have the answer.
I was just talking to our next door neighbor, Robin, and the conversation turned to Trump and what he is really after.
Then it hit me. The answer can be found in the great 1948 movie “Key Largo”, when Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) and James Temple (Lionel Barrymore) verbally confront Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson), who is holding them captive, on just that kind of issue.
Here is their dialogue:
Johnny Rocco: There’s only one Johnny Rocco.
James Temple: How do you account for it?
Frank McCloud: He knows what he wants. Don’t you, Rocco?
Johnny Rocco: Sure.
James Temple: What’s that?
Frank McCloud: Tell him, Rocco.
Johnny Rocco: Well, I want uh …….
Frank McCloud: He wants more, don’t you, Rocco?
Johnny Rocco: Yeah. That’s it. More. That’s right! I want more!
James Temple: Will you ever get enough?
Frank McCloud: Will you, Rocco?
Johnny Rocco: Well, I never have. No, I guess I won’t.
If you watch the scene, you understand much better how this plays out. Rocco, for the only time in the entire movie, is stopped in his tracks. He has everything. Money, women, power, everything. But does not understand what drives him to keep piling it on. McCloud and Temple provide his epiphany…which is that it is because nothing will ever be enough.
And that 68 year old dialogue, in my opinion, defines why we have Donald Trump running for president.
Ever wonder why Donald Trump, who grew up rich and then became a multi-billionaire, and seems far more interested in his own personal glory than anything else, would even consider running for President?
My assumption is for the same reason you or I would run if we had the name recognition and money that he has.
He is sick of what is going on in DC and wants to do what he can to change it.
