President Trump has spent over two years trying to deal with the illegal immigration crisis (yes, CRISIS) on our southern border.
For all that time he has been fought, tooth and nail, by Democrats…with their media sycophants seconding them every step of the way.
So, unable to get past Democrat opposition to securing our borders, and to reforming our insane immigration laws – written at a time when no one imagined the tidal wave of illegals we are dealing with now – President Trump has unilaterally declared that, as of June 10th, there will be a 5% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico to the United States.
And the 5% is just a start. Trump has told Mexico that, unless Mexico takes remedial action on illegal immigration across its border, those tariffs will increase monthly, up to 25% by Oct. 1.
Is this mistreating a friend?
Well, what kind of “friend” treats its own people so poorly, and disregards our borders so completely, that 10% of its entire population (NOT an exaggeration) has crossed that border to come to the United States?
What kind of “friend” has strict immigration laws preventing foreign nationals from crossing into its territory…but is fine with the ones who just travel through and illegally come to the United States?
That’s some helluva friend.
And what is Mexico’s reaction to the just-declared Trump policy?
JUST IN: Mexico’s President Lopez Obrador asks Trump to have U.S. officials meet with the Mexican foreign minister in Washington on Friday to seek a solution that benefits both nations.
Are you surprised? The United States is, far and away, Mexico’s most important trade partner. And if Donald Trump has made one thing clear during his presidency, it is that he is more than just talk; if he says he’s going to do something, there’s an excellent chance that he will do it.
This is not Barack Obama, whose threats meant nothing, and everyone knew it (remember the “red line” he warned Syria not to cross? The one he did nothing about when Syria laughed at his threat and crossed it anyway?) If Trump says there’ll be a tariff, there’ll be a tariff.
Is it possible that Mr. Trump’s action will result – finally – in concrete steps taken by Mexico to cut the crap, stop its own people from illegally coming here, and stop illegals from Honduras, El Salvador, etc. from using Mexico as a rest stop on the way to doing so?
We can hope. But, until something happens that’s all we can do.
Let’s see how this hastily-begged for meeting turns out.
