SCHOOL SECURITY AS AN UNPLEASANT IMPOSITION

Oh, no.

Now that school is back in session at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School in Parkland, Florida, there actually is real security in place.

And, in the view of at least some students, their reaction is “What’s wrong with these people, anyway?”

From Dakin Andone’s article at CNN.com:

When classes first resumed two weeks after the shooting, (Principal Ty) Thompson told students not to bring backpacks at all while they focused on their emotional health and not the curriculum.
Now, along with their newly donated clear backpacks, students will begin to focus on their studies again, Thompson wrote, though the school will continue to provide emotional support as necessary.
The new precautions were put in place after several security breaches last month.
A sheriff’s deputy was suspended after he was found sleeping in his squad car on campus. Two students were charged with bringing weapons to school, and a third made a threat on social media. And then there was the arrest of Zachary Cruz, the adopted brother of the gunman, when he was found skateboarding on campus.
Many students, like (Senior Isabelle) Robinson, aren’t happy about the new security measures. She pointed out that the gunman, Nikolas Cruz, was not a student of Stoneman Douglas at the time of the shooting, so the new security measures that appear to target students are counterproductive.
“It’s like putting into place all these rules that wouldn’t have changed anything,” Robinson said.

If this is the thought process of “many students” at MSD, maybe a little more schooling is in order…and a lot more common sense.

Here’s a thought for them:  it doesn’t matter whether nikolas cruz was a student at that time.  What he did had nothing to do with his status within the school.  What if the next shooter there is a student.  Then what?

But, that said, Ms. Robinson does have a point about nothing changing, even if it is unrelated to the reeasons she voiced:

-Is the “Promise” procedure, which gives disruptive, even violent, students a free pass, – the system which allowed nikolas cruz to avoid having a police record,  thus making it illegal for him to buy the gun he used when slaughtering 17 students and injuring 16 others – still in place?  Yes it is.

-Is there still no armed security on the school’s campus – meaning armed security that would actually do something instead of hanging around outside and allowing the slaughter to take place?  No there is not.

-Do the same arrogant, useless sheriff, scott israel, and his donut deputies who did NOTHING while the carnage occurred still have their jobs?  Yes they do.

Simply stated, MSD High School, today, is just as “secure” as the politically correct folks in Parkland, Florida allow it to be.

Which means that, if I were a student there, or the parent/relative/friend of a student, I’d be worried.  Very worried.
