ROBINSON CANO AND “DISRESPECT”

Apropos of nothing political…

After the 2013 season, New York Yankee second baseman Robinson Cano was a free agent.

The Yankees offered him a huge 7 year $175 million dollar contract.

He turned them down, saying the offer “disrespected” him.

Cano, instead, accepted a 10 year, $240 million dollar contract with the Seattle Mariners.

Over Cano\’s last three years as a Yankee, he had a .309 batting average, and averaged 29 home runs, 106 runs batted in and a .530 slugging percentage per year.  Presumably, this is the kind of production Seattle was hoping to get for most of the 10 years it signed him for.

In Cano\’s first year for Seattle, he batted .314, but with only 14 home runs, 82 runs batted in and a .454 slugging percentage.  Not horrible, but certainly less than what the Mariners hoped for.

This year, about one-third of the way through the season, he has a .244 batting average, 2 home runs, 17 runs batted in and a .330 slugging percentage.

That is horrible.  And it is costing $24 million dollars….with 8 more $24 million dollar years to go.

Even worse, given that Cano is already 32 years old (he\’ll be 33 in October), there is a very real possibility that his best days are over and this is indicative of what Seattle can expect from now on.

Try to imagine how happy the Yankees are that they “disrespected” Cano enough for him to leave.

Ok, back to politics, where, for most of the players, I\’d settle for an occasional bunt single.
