I have written a number of times about the fact that among the most potent assets Republicans have are hard-left Democrats from safely-Democrat districts.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) is certainly one of them. And here, via Ian Schwartz’s article at realclearpolitics.com (too short to excerpt), is a demonstration of why:
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) ripped President Trump for his immigration policy in a sermon at Chicago’s Lincoln United Methodist Church on Saturday. The Democratic Congressman said Trump is the “major criminal” and he will “eliminate” him as president when the Democrats win a majority in the House.
The Lincoln United Methodist Church is a sanctuary church and according to Gutierrez’s website, he “spoke to a packed house about the need to defend DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and other forms of legal immigration status that are under attack from Republicans and Donald Trump.”
Gutierrez said that while Trump is attempting to criminalize immigrants, the president is the “real criminal.” The Congressman said illegal immigrants are not criminals and that history will determine who the true criminals are.
“For me, the major criminal that exists in the United States of America is called Donald Trump, he lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue at the White House,” Gutierrez said to the congregation. “And we’re going to take actions today, and we’re going to take actions tomorrow. And there will soon be a majority in the House of Representatives, and I’m going to make sure that I am there to make sure of one thing, that we write those articles of impeachment and take him to trial before the Senate and eliminate him as president of the United States of America.”
A few questions for Rep. Gutierrez:
-Assuming you are talking about people who have come here illegally – and you have to be, since that is all President Trump is talking about – how do you criminalize people who, by definition, are already criminals?
-If obeying immigration law is unacceptable to you, what other laws are unacceptable? Robbery? Assault? You either accept there are laws or you do not.
-Since you are calling the elected President of the United States a criminal, what evidence do you have of his criminality? What criminal acts has he engaged in?
I have no doubt that Luis Gutierrez was a big hit in that “sanctuary church”. And I have no doubt that he will win re-election every time he runs in his district.
But what effect do you think his words have outside that district? In places that are politically competitive?
If you want a hint about the answer to that question, take a look at the “comments” for this article. As I type this, there are about 1,600 of them – and a sampling of the first 100 or so show them to be overwhelmingly negative toward Rep. Gutierrez.
Luis Gutierrez – and he is not the only one – is as safe-seat a Democrat as you can find. HE will be in congress as long as he cares to be. But how many Democrats in competitive districts will lose because of him – because voters will fear putting people like him in the majority? Because voters will fear that, if elected, the Democrat in their district will support his positions?
Devout Christians are taught to hate the sin but love the sinner.
Devout Republicans should, by now, have learned to hate the far left, but love what they “accomplish” for them on election day.
