“I believe I did use the \’N\’ word in reference to the current occupant of the White House. For this, I do not apologize – he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”
The source of that beyond-disgusting quote is not some hooded horse\’s ass speaking at a KKK meeting. It is robert copeland, the now-former Police Commissioner of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire speaking, apparently at easily-heard conversational volume, in a restaurant this past March.
The one micro-thin silver lining here is that at least copeland was not trying to pretend he was something other than the stone cold racist he is. He was right on the square, where everyone could experience his racism plain as day…
…which leads to the question of how it is possible that such racism would not already have been evident at one point or another to the residents of Wolfeboro – since copeland is 82 years old and has held the position for multiple terms.
Is it because enough people in Wolfeboro are ok with copeland\’s language that it wasn\’t a big deal there? I certainly hope not.
Is it because the town is so lily-White (according to Holly Ramer\’s article for the Associated Press, Wolfeboro has about 20 full time Blacks in a population of 6,300) that his hate-filled disdain for President Obama – and, it seems evident, Blacks in general – is nothing more than a yawn to the citizenry?
Ramer\’s article does say that a town meeting was called over copeland\’s comment and a large number of people condemned him. But there were also people who supported copeland, citing his right to free speech.
Personally I agree that robert copeland has a rght to free speech, in that this is still the USA, and people have a right to mindless hatred. But never in a million years would it be acceptable for a public official entrusted with treating all citizens equally – least of all a public official in charge of the police force.
Real racism. It comes in all forms, from all sources. No group is immune to it, or from it. And, sad to say, this very much includes people who have the power to manifest their racism in tangible ways. Like, for example, a Police Commissioner.
