RAISING CAIN OVER ABLEISTS

It seems that hardly a day goes by without news of some whining pampered college brats whimpering out a hot steamy pile of obnoxious, immature mung that they have decided has value to someone other than themselves.

Think I\’m being a little too harsh?  Then try this on for size.

Excerpted from an article by the blogger who calls him/herself “Aurelius” at punditpress.com:

Students at Arizona State University are petitioning the college to drop the name of “walk-only” zones, claiming the word “walk” is both offensive and “ableist.”

Walk-only zones on ASU, according to the campus website, prohibits cars, bikes, and motorcycles from using the path. The name, however, has a number of students upset.

Some ASU students have taken offense to the term and have posted their grievances online and have started a petition.

“ASU is one of the largest universities in the United States and is a place of work, learning, and leisure to over 75,000 people on campus,” the petition begins. “Enforcing “Walk Only” zones onto campus property marginalizes disabled bodies who cannot walk.”

The title of the petition is named “Change the name to “Pedestrian Only” or any other inclusive title.”

Not only is this about as inane and ridiculous a “grievance” to whine about as you will ever find, but – incredibly – the word they want to substitute for “Walk”, “Pedestrian”, specifically means “on foot”.  Therefore “Pedestrian Only” creates exactly the same problem (actually, non-problem for anyone using more than 2% of his/her brain function) as “Walk Only”.

Can mommy and daddy possibly be paying tuition for their boys and girls to expend time and energy on something like this?

Anyway, I hope my blog hasn\’t committed too many microaggressions for the easily-bruised sensibilities of whomever wrote and/or signs that petition.   But if I have, I\’ll be sure to feel really bad about it.  Really bad.  Really.
