OPPOSITION TO THE WAR IN IRAQ: ANOTHER TRUMP LIE

Ken Berwitz

Donald Trump, during last Saturday\’s Republican debate:

“I\’m the only one on this stage that said, \’Do not go into Iraq. Do not attack Iraq\’.  Nobody else on this stage said that. And I said it loud and strong. And I was in the private sector. I wasn\’t a politician, fortunately. But I said it, and I said it loud and clear, \’You\’ll destabilize the Middle East.\'”

Trump also said, to thunderous boos from the audience, that President Bush lied about there being WMDs in Iraq.

With that in mind, Andrew Kaczynski of buzzfeed.com did some extensive checking, and could not find even one instance of Donald Trump saying, before the invasion, “Do not go into Iraq.  Do not attack Iraq”, or anything like it.

But he did find this, from Donald Trump\’s book “The American We Deserve”, which was published three years before the invasion took place:

Either I am grossly misreading the above, or it shows Donald Trump saying that saddam was developing a nuclear arsenal, he might already have had the means to complete that development, and if we decide a strike against Iraq is necessary – not that we shouldn\’t, but if we do – we should go all out and finish the job.

So far, neither Donald Trump nor anyone else has come up with even one example of Donald Trump saying no, we should not attack Iraq.  But the above passage is an example of him discussing a war on Iraq – not to oppose it, but to support vanquishing Iraq if there is one.

Why would anyone believe a word that comes out of this man\’s mouth?
