In an otherwise awful election year, here is what may well be the single best piece of news for Democrats: Nancy Pelosi’s grip on the party is almost certainly over (and Hillary Clinton’s along with it).
Pelosi spent years lying to our faces about the cognitive state of Joe Biden – up to, and including, her efforts to make sure that no one seriously challenged him in the primaries. How many times did she tell us he was “sharp as a tack” and fully in control? I lost count.
But then, having “won” the renomination (or, more exactly, the Pelosians and their pals making sure no one else made a serious run during the primaries), Biden had a debate performance so awful that he made Trump – himself an awful debater – look great by comparison. Suddenly it seemed evident that Biden’s condition could no longer be hidden and that he stood an excellent chance of losing.
So Pelosi spearheaded the move to push him out – which, you can bet, Biden will go to his grave despising her for – and installing the hard-left, inconsequential, unexciting, uninspiring Kamala Harris as the candidate instead.
And what did the Democrat Party get for these machinations? A second Donald Trump presidency – complete with majorities in both houses of congress.
So where does that leave Nancy Pelosi? It leaves her out, see?
Miranda Devine, writing for the New York Post, has just put out an excellent commentary on Pelosi’s current off-the-end-of-the-earth political status, titled “Nancy Pelosi is finished — no one deserves more blame for Dems’ $1B electoral collapse”. Here are a few excerpts:
It’s high time to shatter the myth of Nancy Pelosi as a master strategist. Nobody deserves more blame than the ridiculously self-titled “speaker emerita” for the Democrats’ $1 billion electoral collapse.
Under her ruthless leadership, her party lost the White House, the House, the Senate and the popular vote. You can’t say that enough.
Voters rejected the Dems from coast to coast, even in Pelosi’s deepest-blue home city of San Francisco, which saw a 7-point swing to Donald Trump.
She’s the only speaker in history to have lost control of the House twice.
She’s finished.
Her saccharine-coated “Mean Girls” style of partisan viciousness and deviousness turns out to have done nothing for her party but postpone the inevitable reckoning between the radical left and common-sense moderates. Unfortunately for the Dems, most of the latter have taken a hike under Pelosi’s reign.
If the GOP is Trump’s party, the Democratic Party is Pelosi’s — and what a viper’s nest of blame-shifting and rancor it has become, as they all blame each other for their humiliating defeat at the hands of the man they derided as a Nazi. Most Americans didn’t agree, and now the Democrats and their media handmaidens stand exposed as frauds and liars.
In her two decades of amoral, divisive leadership, the Democrats have become the party of censorship, scolds, war and corporate interests.
She devoted the twilight years of her career to her obsession with destroying Trump and his supporters, whom she slyly set up on Jan. 6, 2021, by refusing to give Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund the National Guard backup he begged for, and then turned the Jan. 6 committee into her personal star chamber.
All her hatred, the impeachments and lawfare and jailing of Trump allies, served neither her party nor the country. Trump is back, better than ever, her party is in ruins and the country has been through hell for four years.
Sadly – to Nancy Pelosi, that is – there is very little to dispute in Ms. Devine’s analysis.
But happily for the party she has been so material in turning into roadside wreckage, it now has an opportunity to get out from under. Not just from Pelosi, but from the rest of the crowd that has run the Democrat Party…run it into the ground…over recent years.
Look who has been in charge: Other than current House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is 54 years old, the party’s leaders, other than the 84 year old Pelosi, are Joe Biden (82 on Wednesday), Chuck Schumer (73), Dick Durbin (79), Steny Hoyer (85), Jim Clyburn (84)…getting the idea?
Simply stated, other than Hakeem Jeffries every one of the Democrat leadership crowd is, literally, old enough to be his parent.
In fact, the only youth movement Democrats have had in years has been “the squad” – which is even worse than the crew mentioned above, because it is so far out in looney-tune leftland.
The best hope I see for the Democrat Party is that this year’s elections force it to finally upend its geriatric roadblock and get a newer look – with the important caveat that the newer look doesn’t lurch the party even further to the left/outside the country’s mainstream than where it already has moved. If so, we just might see a more attractive, more salable, more voter-viable alternative.
Personally, I’m rooting very hard for that to happen. I want two strong political parties. Not one Trump-fest and one Pelosi-fest.
