MICHAEL BROWN AND ERIC GARNER AS DIVERSIONARY OPPORTUNITIES

Someone (we can\’t see who, but the sign\’s language suggests it is a child) was holding this sign at one of the protests against the killing of  Michael Brown and Erc Garner:

Let\’s see how many things are wrong what the sign says:

-First off, I am still waiting for someone to tell me why either incident was racial in nature.

In both cases, the only reason I have ever heard is that the police officers are White and Brown and Garner were Black – which proves exactly nothing, since there are countless interactions between White police officers and Black men/women every day that are not racial in nature.

And no one has claimed that any racist behavior – such as, for example, use of the word “nigger” or stereotypes of Black people – took place during either incident.

So I\’m asking again:  where is the racist element?  Because in its absence, the overriding premise of the sign – that Michael Brown and Eric Garner were killed because of their skin color – has no basis in fact.

Now, how about the specific claims – i.e. what “they” do to “our daddies” and that “they” then laugh about us for being fatherless:

-Local police report killing about 400 people a year, with about 100 of them being Black.  Obviously, not all of them are Black males.

But there are about 20 million Black males in the USA, most of them of an age when they can become fathers.  How does the loss of less than 100 out of over 10 million translate in to wholesale killing of daddies?

-Further, each year, there are about 600,000 live births of Black children in the USA.  Statistics indicate that slightly more than 72% of those births are out of wedlock.  How does the loss of less than 100 out of 433,000 explain fatherless Black families?

The sad reality is that Michael Brown and Eric Garner mean nothing to the people who put up signs like the one you see above.  They are pawns;  diversionary opportunities, used to explain away problems that have nothing whatsoever to do with police.  They are a way to avoid dealing with reality, through the use of police as the scapegoat for problems – real problems – which plague the overall Black community.

Sending out a child to hold a sign which tries to do this is pathetic.
