MELISSA CLICK – PRETENDING SHE CARES: A STUDY IN SELF-INTEREST

Ken Berwitz

Yesterday melissa click was on top of the world.  She was with the good guys, the Academic Brownshirts who had taken over the University of Missouri and were busy consolidating their gains.

So when a reporter with a camera tried to take a picture of what she and her fascistic buddies were doing, click had no problem at all leading the pack and refusing to allow him this apparent “privilege”.  She literally called for “some muscle” to physically remove the reporter…and got it too.  What a proud moment.  joseph goebbels would have done exactly the same.

But, as Scarlett O\’Hara said at the end of “Gone With The Wind”, tomorrow is another day.

Excerpted from Steven Deere and Alex Stuckey\’s article in today\’s Saint Louis Post-Dispatch:

Melissa Click shut herself in her university office onTuesday afternoon and could be heard sobbing through the door.

A day earlier, the communications professor at theUniversity of Missouri had helped lead a multitude of activists form a circlehundreds of yards long to block reporters from a tent encampment on Mizzou\’sCarnahan Quadrangle, following the resignation of University of Missouri PresidentTimothy M. Wolfe.

A video that went viral Monday evening showed Click callingout for “muscle” to help remove a student journalist from the area.

Click emerged from her office around 5 p.m. Tuesday andreleased a statement apologizing for her actions. She said she had contactedthe journalists involved to also apologize, and regretted that she had shiftedattention from the “students\’ campaign for justice.”

“From this experience I have learned about humanity andhumility,” Click said.

Also on Tuesday, activists who had shouted “Hey, Hey,Ho, Ho, reporters have got to go,” had changed their stance, distributingleaflets urging protesters to respect journalists\’ first amendment rights andto welcome them on the quad.

Still, the focus remained on Click, whose fiery demeanor inthe video seemingly in disregard to free speech, had created a sideshow in astory about campus racism and the power of activism.

Now she was at the mercy of a horde. A petition calling forher firing was circulating. People had posted her phone number and emailaddress on online forums. Some had created a Facebook page titled “Hey,Hey, Ho, Ho, Melissa Click has got to go.” Police reported that she hadreceived death threats.

The Internet Hate Machine was revving its engine, anduniversity leaders had taken notice.

David Kurpius, dean of the Missouri School of Journalism, issued a statement praising Tai and emphasizing that Click is professor in thecommunications department, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, not the journalism school.

“Journalism School faculty members are taking immediateaction to review that appointment,” he wrote.

Poor baby.

The reaction to this beyond-sickening display of hatred for free speech is so bad that click and her friends have been forced to pretend – yes, pretend – that they are regretful.

Don\’t believe them for a second.  If this fraudulent bunch gave a damn about free speech they never would have attacked the reporter in the first place.  The only “humanity and humility” this phony-baloney has learned is not to do it where a video is running.

As for melissa click in particular, I can\’t prove it, but I would bet body parts that regret is only a function of self-interest, as she tries to save her job.

This woman has no place near a college campus, and neither do the people who provided her “muscle”.

When does someone who supposedly is in charge TAKE charge and retrieve what used to be an institution of higher learning from the taliban wannabes who currently are occupying it.

One other thing:  I intentionally included that line about the “internet hate machine” to show you that, even in reporting click\’s supposed contrition, the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch is still trying to figure out how to be sympathetic to her.  Did writers Deere and Stuckey call what click and the other brownshirts did any part of a “hate machine”?  Nope.  They couldn\’t even admit her actions were against free speech – it was only “seemingly in disregard to (sic) free speech”.

What benighted fools.
