IF NOT HILLARY…WHO?

Being 68 years old and living in an upper middle class environment in central New Jersey, I come across a great many women in our circle and among their friends, who absolutely adore Hillary Clinton.  They can\’t wait to vote for her in 2016.

And that, I think, is one of Ms. Clinton\’s biggest problems.

Assuming she runs (and I am not at all convinced she will), Ms. Clinton will turn 69 years old during the 2016 campaign.  She has been in our faces continually – some might say incessantly – for almost a quarter century.

Does she connect with the young voters who Democrats must have to win?  Thinking specifically of 18 – 24\’s, she is old enough to be their GRANDMOTHER.  I wonder how many of them see her as nothing other than a relic their parents talk a lot about.

I, of course, don\’t know whether that is the case. But maybe the reception she got when speaking at Georgetown University yesterday is an indication:

The reports say that auditorium was less than half full. Not exactly a testament to Ms. Clinton\’s charisma, is it?
Now this could be just a strange anomaly.  Maybe at the very moment she came on stage Taylor Swift showed up on the quad.  Or there was a big pancake-eating contest.  Or….well, you get the idea.
But suppose it is not.  Suppose Hillary has run her course among young voters.  Who does the Democrat Party have to take her place?
Elizabeth Warren (67 in 2016; a hero to the left, but few others – sort of George McCovern with different plumbing)?
Joe Biden (74 in 2016, and serially prone to making comments people wince at regardless of party)?
A lot has been said about how light the Republican Party lineup of Presidential prospects is (I disagree, and will discuss this in a future blog).  But if I were a Democrat, I don\’t know that I\’d be seeing much of an advantage.
