Here, from the realclearpolitics.com website, are the results of polling in the seven so-called “swing states” – the ones that would almost certainly determine who our next president is:
- 2024 Arizona: Trump vs Biden
Trump +5.2
- 2024 Georgia: Trump vs Biden
Trump +4.6
- 2024 Michigan: Trump vs Biden
Trump +0.8
- 2024 Nevada: Trump vs Biden
Trump +6.2
- 2024 North Carolina: Trump vs Biden
Trump +5.4
- 2024 Pennsylvania: Trump vs Biden
Trump +2.0
- 2024 Wisconsin: Trump vs Biden
Trump +0.6
Those polls – which have been extremely dangerous until now – have gotten even worse.
So how much longer can Democrats stick with Biden?
Are they really resting their hopes on the June 27 debate?
Are they counting on the fact that it will be conducted at Trump-hating CNN, and that the two moderators, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, are Trump-hating Jake Tapper and Trump-hating Dana Bash?
Do they think that Trump won’t make a major point of the ingoing bias these two have against him? You’re going to hear this continuously for the next month – which will put immense pressure on Tapper and Bash to be even-handed, even deferential, to him.
Do they think that, if Tapper and Bash don’t hold back and try to be at least evenhanded, Trump won’t call them out on it during the debate?
My guess is that, if this debate takes place at all, unless Donald Trump implodes (and, Trump being Trump, that’s not out of the realm of possibility), Biden is going to sound like a bumbling, semi-cogent old man. The reason? Because he IS a bumbling, semi-cogent old man.
Should that happen, Democrats – whether Biden likes it or not – will try and find a way to remove him from the ticket.
But here’s their problem:
-If they can’t do it, they’ll be stuck with a bumbling, semi-cogent old man for an entire presidential campaign. You don’t need me to tell you what a disaster that would be.
-But if they can do it, just about the last person on earth they are likely to consider as his replacement would be Kamala Harris, who is disdained/disliked by a majority of voters.
How do you think Black voters will feel if the next-in-line replacement for Biden – a Black woman who has spent four years one heartbeat away from the presidency – is dumped in favor of someone else?
The only way this could be ameliorated is if another Black candidate takes her place.
But the only Black candidate I’ve heard mentioned, Michelle Obama (whose qualifications for the office, other than that she would be a surrogate for her husband, do not exist) says she wants no part of it.
So who else would it be? Gavin Newsom? The Guy Smiley of politics, who is overseeing the disastrous disintegration of the state he is in charge of? Lots of luck with that.
Is this a problem? Let me re-ask that: is there any way this could be a bigger problem? I don’t think so.
Stay tuned, folks. The pre and post debate time period will be anything but boring.
