“America – Imagine the World Without Her”, a very pro-American documentary created by conservative Dinesh D\’Souza, was released in late June.
Since that time, though in a very limited number of theaters, it has managed to generate box office receipts closing in on $10,000,000 ($9,403,343 as of yesterday), which makes it one of the highest-grossing documentaries of all time.
You\’d think someone would have something – anything – good to say about it, wouldn\’t you? You\’d at least think there was acknowledgement that “America – Imagine the World Without Her” exists per se, right?
Well, it got horrible reviews by every movie critic.
-metacritic.com shows 11 reviews. Using its own rating scale, “America”\’s single highest rating was 40% out of 100% – with 4 ratings of 0%;
–rottentomatoes.com shows 21 reviews. It rates 19 of them “rotten” -i.e. negative – and two “fresh” (one of which is right on the margin). Interestingly, however, among the 6,072 (as I write this) moviegoers who rated “America”, 90% gave it a positive rating. I acknowledge that most people who go to see a movie like this are probably predisposed to like it…but not enough to explain an astronomically high rating like that.
And if you go to boxofficemojo.com, one of the most heavily trafficked web sites of its kind, you cannot find “America” at all. Search the site and it isn\’t there. Almost $10,000,000 in receipts and, on that site, it doesn\’t even exist. boxofficemojo.com does, however, list “The Amazing Catfish”, eeleased two weeks earlier than “America”, which has grossed a total of $11,278 – about 1/833rd of “America”\’s total. Evidently that is far more noteworthy.
Is this bias? The vastly left-wing mindset of the Hollywood crowd?
That\’s like asking if the rainforest is wet.
