HERE\’S YOUR LATTE…YOU RACIST

Ken Berwitz

You cannot make this stuff up.

Excerpted from Anthony Gockowski\’s article at campusreform.org:

Oregon State University (OSU) will be hosting aworkshop called “Making the Unknown Known: ExploringImplicit Bias in Everyday Life” as part of a nine-day commemoration of MartinLuther King Jr. The workshop will teach students “to uncover and challenge theimplicit biases that contribute to injustice.”

Among these “implicit biases that contribute to injustice” is “ordering coffee,” according to the workshop\’s description.

“What do the Supreme Court\’s ruling on the Fair Housing Actin late June, recent killings of black men by white police officers, and aperson ordering coffee at Starbucks have in common? Answer: Implicit bias,” thedescription states.

Implicit biases, according to the event description, are “stereotypes that influence our perceptions, judgements, and behaviors in anunconscious manner,” meaning an act as unconscious as ordering coffee could bea bias incident that contributes to injustice.

Michele Ribeiro, interim mental health promotion director atOSU who helped organize the workshop, told Campus Reform orderingcoffee could be considered an implicit bias “because it is a common everydaything people do.”

“Just because it is a common everyday thing people do…ordercoffee…implicit bias is also a common everyday thing people do, though maybenot conscious,” she explained.

Words truly fail me.  I don\’t know how to express the level of idiocy you were just subjected to.

Note to Michele Ribeiro:  Black people order coffee at Starbucks too.  Why, I\’ve actually seen them!  I guess they\’re racists too.  Why they\’re so………implicit!
But look at the bright side.  This should thrill Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, shouldn\’t it?

Remember last year, when Mr. Schultz asked his counter-people* to engage customers in discussions about race relations?  Well, here\’s his wish come true.

On the other hand, based on what is being taught at Oregon State, I wouldn\’t ask him how he likes the way those discussions might turn out.

See, Schultz grew up in the Bayview projects – located in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn (Canarsie being where I spent the first five years of my own life)…and, I suspect, a lot of the Canarsie section of Brooklyn would come out in the quality – especially the four-letter word quality – of his answer.

*Starbucks likes to call the people who make its coffee “baristas”.  You want to use an overblown description like that?  Go right ahead.  But include me out.
