Apropos of nothing political.
This is the 50th anniversary of my one and only year as a student at Saint Louis University. And I still find myself rooting for its basketball team (the year I was there we had, if I remember correctly, a 13 – 12 record in b-ball….but we won the NCAA soccer championship!!).
Congratulations to the Billikens on their comeback victory over North Carolina State yesterday, in which they erased a 16 point deficit with about 8 minutes to go, tied the game in regulation, and won in overtime. Wow!
(Incidentally, in case you care, a “Billiken” is an imaginary elf-like creature which was created over a century ago by one Florence Pretz, a Missouri art teacher, and became a national fad of sorts. Legend has it that the Billiken became associated with Saint Louis University because it looked a little like Saint Louis\’s then-football coach, John Bender…but no one is sure. In any event it has been the school\’s mascot ever since.)
Ok, enough. Now, back to politics, where most of us wish a lot more was imaginary instead of real.
