Based on a comment she made while interviewing Secretary Of State Marco Rubio yesterday, I have to at least consider the fact that Face The Nation host Margaret Brennan considers the second amendment a pathway to another holocaust.
Does that last paragraph read like something straight out of Looney-Tunes, maybe a quote from Daffy Duck or Bugs Bunny? I wouldn’t argue if you thought so. But there is actually a reason for wondering if it is true.
From Brianna Lyman’s article for thefederalist.com:
CBS News’ Margaret Brennan claimed Sunday that free speech was to blame for the Holocaust.
During an interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Brennan spun a wild theory that free speech in Germany paved the way for the Holocaust, arguing that Vice President J.D. Vance’s criticisms of European attacks on free speech were problematic because, according to Brennan, free speech was “weaponized” in Nazi Germany.
“Well, [Vance] was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide, and he met with the head of a political party that has far-right views and some historic ties to extreme groups,” Brennan said. “The context of that was changing the tone of it. And you know that, the censorship was specifically about the right.”
Huh??? Wah???
Just curious, Margaret: are you or are you not in favor of free speech on your show? How about on the overall CBS network? I mean, if free speech was weaponized to conduct a holocaust in nazi Germany, I suppose the same can happen in the United States.
Not surprisingly, Secretary Of State Rubio has a somewhat different take on free speech and nazis. His reaction:
“There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was none. There was also no opposition in Nazi Germany. They were a sole and only party that governed that country. So, that’s not an accurate reflection of history.”
Vice President J.D. Vance was a little more direct in his reaction:
“This is a crazy exchange. Does the media really think the holocaust was caused by free speech?”
While Mr. Vance was less diplomatic Mr. Rubio, they both were far more prosaic than what I would have heard during my Brooklyn/Queens (mostly Queens) upbringing. There, the response would have been more like “Holy shit Margaret, what are you,? A fuckin’ idiot?” Admittedly a tad more crude than required, but you can’t say it doesn’t bring the point home.
Let me tell you; between Margaret Brennan on Face The Nation and Kristen Welker on Meet The Press – with her own compilation of similarly biased comments – I can’t help thinking thateSunday morning “news” shows are a tad less evenhanded than they might ideally be….
