FERTILIZING DAY

Apropos of nothing political….

Sometimes I’m smarter than I look (well, actually I’ve been told that’s not much of an accomplishment, but nonetheless….).

Today’s forecast is for rain/wet snow, changing to snow, and a couple of inches of wet snow which will quickly be melted away by warmer temperatures.

What a great day to fertilize the lawn.

I ran out to Home Depot, got the early spring version (with pre-emergent crab grass killer), oiled the spreader so it worked well, and dropped fertilizer on all our grass in the front, sides and back of the property.

The snow – which the fertilizer company assures me has no affect on its product – will both sink it into the ground and, because it is snow rather than rain (which sometimes washes fertilizer away from parts of the lawn), will also keep it in place.

In a week we’ll have the greenest lawn on the block (hell, maybe the entire county…I like to think big), and, to put it in rhyme,…. all of the not-yet-emergent crab grass, will have gotten a kick in the, er, pre-ermergent stage.

One last point.  For years now I have done this myself.  I refuse to pay 3 – 4 times the cost of the product to a lawn company, which then rewards me by fertilizing when it’s a good time for their scheduling, not necessarily when it’s a good time for my lawn, like today is.

Bottom line:  I save a ton of money, more efficient/more effective fertilizing, and get some much-needed exercise.  Win-win-win (or is that win-win/win-win?).

Ok, now back to politics, where there is no shortage of fertilizer EVERY day.  No schedule needed.

UPDATE:  It is now about 24 hours since I fertilized.  The lawn is covered in snow, which is melting, thus sinking the fertilizer into the ground without moving it around.  Just as I had hoped.  I couldn’t be happier (welllllll, I couldn’t be happier lawn-wise, that is).
