DONALD TRUMP’S IMPROBABLE CAMPAIGN ASSET

In 1944, the great Mills Brothers had a huge hit song titled “You Only Hurt The One You Love”.

If John, Herbert, Harry and Donald Mills were alive, well, and recording this week, their song might well have been “You Only Help The One You Hate”.  Because that is what the hard left, and their many media supporters, did for Donald Trump.

Let’s start with the fact that Donald Trump is pretty much everything the lard left hates rolled up into one 70 year old stocky frame.

Trump is fabulously wealthy, transcendentally arrogant, self-assured and hubristic, masterful at manipulating (or having other people manipulate) his business enterprises, happy to exploit tax laws…..and hugely successful at it (he’s a multi-billionaire).

So what did they do as Trump steamrollered his Republican competition in the primaries and ascended to the party’s presidential nomination?

Well, actually, they did exactly what the hard left do with every Republican politician:  they assured us, with copious media help, that he is an idiot, a fraud, a liar, a racist and a bunch of other things that you’ve heard every four years, so you don’t need me to list them out.  To these people that is the working definition of “Republican”.

Plus, with Trump’s bluntly stated stands on immigration, we also got the xenophobia card (not that they wouldn’t have tagged Romney, McCain, Bush, etc. with it as well if they had needed it).  The fact that Trump did not attack people of any race or religion who were legally in the United States or demand that they leave?  Irrelevant’n’immaterial.

In the hard left’s minds, such as they are, calling for serious vetting of Muslims arriving from countries with terrorist activity is xenophobic.  As is noting that a lot of Mexican illegals are criminals (not one bad word about Mexicans legally here or Mexican nationals living in Mexico).

And, of course, we have the racism card – based entirely, it would seem, on Trump’s strong skepticism about where Barak Obama was born.

Why would questioning Mr. Obama’s country of birth be racist – any more or less than, for example the left’s questioning of whether John McCain’s place of birth (the Panama Canal Zone) or Mitt Romney’s (Mexico, ironically) would have anything to do with race? Still waiting for an answer on that one.

So while Trump was talking about the serious concerns that most of us have – secure borders, stanching the loss of manufacturing jobs, repealing/redoing the unworkable monstrosity called ObamaCare, etc.) the left answered with name calling….along with a list of concocted “accomplishments” by Barack Obama that were so ridiculous I suspect they even made some of his supporters cringe.

John and Jane Q. Public got months of this rat-a-tat from the left, along with Hillary Clinton – the tired, stale, corrupt, dishonest Hillary Clinton – seconding the motion – most notably with her “basket of deplorables”, which essentially told people disposed to vote for Trump that they were a bunch of mouth-breathing, hate-filled, ignorant scumbags.

We can only wonder how many – how many millions – of voters selected Trump less because they liked him and more to stick it to these smug, arrogant, self-defined ubermenchen who told us how superior they were throughout this campaign.

Enough to take it from Hillary and give it to The Donald?

I can’t prove it.  But I’d bet anything the answer is yes.
