For over four months, after Michael Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, Missouri by a White police officer, there have been protests in New York City.
They started as mostly small and orderly protests, but grew in size and in anarchy, because every escalation was not only ignored by New York Mayor bill de blasio, but was, seemingly, welcomed by him and the people around him.
Protesters started closing streets. Bridges. Disrupting the lives of everyone. And barely a peep out of de blasio & Co.
Even when they marched, illegally, down the middle of the street chanting “What do we want?” “Dead Cops”, they were allowed to continue as if there were not a thing wrong with it. Did you hear a word about this from Mayor de blasio? Did you hear any commentary by other protesters that they disavowed those marchers and demanded they stop immediately?
They all gave this sick, hate-filled sentiment their tacit, maybe even enthusiastic, approval.
And now that this unchallenged chant for dead cops has come true, at the hands of a lunatic who made it clear that he was exacting retribution for Brown and Eric Garner? Suddenly de blasio finds a reason to try and convince us he gives a damn about the NYPD.
His strong, decisive action? To ask, pretty please with sugar on top, that they suspend their protests until after the funerals.
But, after the past four months, who believes that he cares? Certainly not the protesters, who were on the streets again last night, doing exactly the same things they did before.
There is a still small, but growing, chorus of demands that de blasio step down as Mayor. Any doubt about why? Any doubt that the chorus is going to grow?
But it is hard to feel sympathy for New Yorkers. Just one year ago, they for this joke; 73% of them. And, to de blasio\’s credit, he never tried to hide who and what he was.
I hope they\’re happy with what they got.
