I\’ve never been much of a David Letterman fan. And I can\’t say that what you are about to read has moved me in that direction.
I just found out that, on Friday night\’s show, Mr. Letterman had this to say about President Obama\’s handling of the ISIS disaster:
“Theadministration now has a name for the war against ISIS. Have youheard the name? You know, everymilitary operation has to have a name, so people can get behind it, andthey now have a name for the war against ISIS: \’Operation Hillary\’sProblem.\'”
Is it a funny punch line? Yes – if you see ISIS as nothing other than a joke opportunity. The audience certainly seemed to like it.
My problem? ISIS is a lunatic radical Islamic scourge, which has taken over enough land (way more than enough, actually) to declare its own state from parts of Iraq and Syria, and is killing countless people in the most gruesome ways imaginable every day.
Joking that President Obama is useless and will let it fester for the next two-plus years, while a significant commentary on the quality of this administration (especially coming from an Obama booster like Letterman) does not make ISIS a laughing matter.
Maybe, Mr. Letterman, you would like to see that a translated version of this segment is broadcast into Kobani, Syria, which everyone seems to know is about to suffer a massacre of epic proportions. It will give them something to smile about as they watch their friends and family killed…until they are as well. Or how about to the Yazidi sect in Iraq, so many of whom were either starved to death or killed by ISIS – which shows its “bravery” by slaughtering peaceful, defenseless people. I\’m sure they\’ll be slapping their knees and belly-laughing too.
ISIS is not a joke line, Mr. Letterman. And neither is President Obama\’s utter uselessness in fighting it.
On the other hand, maybe you can write some great laugh lines now, for when the terrorist acts – quite possibly perpetrated by US citizens who joined ISIS but whose passports have not been taken from them, and/or terrorists who stroll across the border Mr. Obama refuses to secure – start in this country.
Do you remember how people who think like you – maybe even you yourself – accused President Bush of “knowing” that 9/11 would take place, based on an August 6th, 2001 memo (which, in fact, provided no such information)?
Well this is 2014 and EVERYONE KNOWS NOW that ISIS intends to hit us. Right now. This minute. We all know.
Will you be telling jokes the day after ISIS does so? Will you be blaming President Obama and eric holder for making it eminently easy for them to do so?
Start writing your punch lines now, David. Since Obama & Co. are just as feckless as your ISIS “joke” makes them out to be, it won\’t be long before you\’ll be able to use them.
